how much is the usual pay for a used car to be professionally inspected by a mechanic?

I am planning to go car shopping tomorrow and my friends keep telling me to bring someone with me who knows cars really good. I figured I’d just bring a licensed mechanic with me.

I’m just wondering how much is the usual pay for this inspection? I live in the Bay Area (specifically East Bay).

Thank you.

Well if you are going to “take him to the car”,- then you are “renting him”, and will have to pay whatever his hourly charge is!

If you bring the car to him,-then you are only paying for his time working on the car! Depending on the mechanic, - and the “shop rate” it could run anywhere from $25-75 . Also it will be more expensive depending on how long and how thoroughly the car is checked out, — also if computer diagnnostic is run to check computer operation and sensors!

If there’s a PepBoys around then ask the owner if he’ll let you get it inspected there. They have 2 different types of inspecations, for $15 or $45 I think. Thank should cover it. If you have a mechanic inspect it for $20 and he makes a mistake you wont have any recourse. Also make sure you run CarFax before you buy a used car. Might also want to run AutoCheck. Sometimes, very rarely, but it happens that one has a problem listed when the other does not. Good Luck!

On and my advise - buy a new car, lease it now then flip it into a purchase and keep it for like 7-8 years. It’ll cost you way less then buying a used car not then buying another used car in 2-3 years and spending tons fixing both cars….

    The normal fee is $60.
