Where can I buy Euros?
November 30th, 2009 Posted by: admin
I’m going on a week-long trip to Rome and Florence next month, and my trip adviser recommended we buy a few Euros before getting on the plane (so we can buy a coffee or some food if we land, or incase something happens and we get separated from the group). Where could I go about buying Euros? If it helps at all he said I could get them from the American Express travel store…is this true? or would it just be a cheque worth so many Euros, and not actual Euros?
This is my first time traveling overseas, so any help is greatly appreciated

if you have an ATM card, you can get some out of cash machine in arrivals area of the Italian airport you arrive at….you will get a better exchange rate and not have to pay a transaction fee….but if you really want to have some EUR in hand, stop at the foreign exchange booth at the airport you are leaving from. Traveler’s checks are an inconvenience, IMO

Go to your bank. They should be able to sell you euros. To be honest, there is no need to do that. Once you land you can go to an ATM machine and get money ( you pay an average of $5 per transaction, so take enough out); you get a better exchange rate. There are also exchange booths at any airport.
When I have traveled, I have never taken foreing money with me, I always get it from the ATM or exchange booth.

call you bank (ask if they have a money exchange service) and the airport and ask what the exchange rate is at each and go with the better

All major European airports have exchange bureaus and ATMs in baggage claim or in the arrivals area after immigration. Waiting until you arrive to get money is a good bet because you will get a better exchange rate.
I have lived and traveled all over the world and I never exchange money until I arrive in my particular destination. Additionally, I DO NOT recommend that you get any American Express travelers checks. They are a hassle to exchange and flag you as a tourist. Use your credit card for large purchases and use the ATM to get cash as needed. FYI - I don’t recommend using your debit card for purchases at stores and restaurants - the fees for using a debit card internationally are rather high, plus the fraud policies are different. Only use your ATM/debit card at a bank’s cash machine.
Have fun! You’ll love Italy!
