Can my drugstore sell my prescription information and my contact information without my permission?

My husband and I have been getting phone calls from drug salesmen who want to know if we would like to buy (insert the name of one of our new prescriptions here) in quantity. We’ve been pretty alarmed as there really should have been no way some phone solictor should know what medications we were taking anyway.
Finally today, one of them confirmed that our drug store was SELLING OUR PRESCRIPTION AND CONTACT INFORMATION to these people. When we called the drug store, they told us that they were legally allowed to do this and that by having prescriptions filled there, we were giving them permission to distribute this information about us.
Is this really actually legal???????????
PS - it’s a national chain, btw, if that matters, and we’ve never signed anything except on the line for insurance purposes.
